During the inaugural BBC6 Music (a UK Radio station) John Peel Lecture The Who guitarist Pete Townshend asked Apple to help and support up and coming bands instead of "bleeding" them like a "digital vampire". He also criticised unauthorised file-sharing, claiming the internet was "destroying copyright as we know it".
Mr Townshend outlined the various services that good record labels and music publishers provide to artists and challenged Apple to do the same asking "Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the … internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire…?”, He suggested that Apple should employ talent scouts to give guidance to new acts and provide financial and marketing support to the best ones.
The ace guitarist also spoke out against illegal file sharers comparing downloading music without paying for it with traditional theft saying they "may as well steal my son's bike while they're at it".
The guitarist was speaking at the inaugural John Peel Lecture. He praised John Peel who alerted listeners to new music alongside the new releases of more established bands throughout his career "Sometimes he played some records that no-one else would ever have played, and that would never be played on radio again," he said.
The John Peel lecture will become an annual event.
