M5 CRASH

Avon and Somerset Police have advised that 25–plus vehicle crash on the M5 near Taunton (Somerset, UK) has left several dead and up to 35 injured.

They say that cause of the crash, which happened near junction 25 at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time, is unknown. There have, however, been a number of separate reports of exceptionally heavy rain and very foggy conditions which may have been, at the very least, contributory factors.

Emergency Services on Scene

Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton, is reported to be dealing with a range of trauma injuries from over 15 casualties

The Assistant Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police has said "several people" have died but could be specific about numbers until the situation is clearer. He also said: "The incident was very, very challenging”.

Avon and Somerset Police have released a helpline number for people concerned about relatives: 0800 092 0410.

The fire service say there had been about 20 "light vehicles" involved in the incident, along with six lorries. "Most vehicles were well alight and most continued to burn for a considerable time. This made it very difficult to search the vehicles. Some of them have been burned to the ground."

Currently crews were "damping down" at the scene of the crash, which some say is "the worst anyone can remember".

Road Closures

The M5 is currently shut northbound between junctions 25 and 24, and southbound between junctions 23 and 25 and the Highways Agency have motorway was not expected to reopen until 21:00 on the 5th November.

6 mile tailbacks are reported to be causing delays of up to five-and-a-half hours are and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.
