Get Safe Online Week 2011

Are Smartphones too clever by half?

This week is Get Safe Online week.

Get Safe Online in the UK are an umbrella initiative bringing together industry, police and government to provide free and user friendly advice on keeping us safe on line.

They recently a warning to smartphone users as there has been a significant increase in the rise of smartphone malware and users are not protecting themselves. Typically the malware is hidden within copies of apps or games which the user is tricked into downloading. When installed the malware will run in the background without the user being aware silently generating cash for the owners of the apps.

This can, for instance, silently text premium rate services. In extreme cases as much have one text a minute has been seen and the user would not know until they get their monthly bill.
